The Millburn Township Public Schools’ Preschool Integrated Program is located at the South Mountain Elementary School, 2 Southern Slope Drive, Millburn.
The unique program is comprised of children with special needs as well as typically developing preschool children from the township. A general Preschool Curriculum is followed by all students. The District charges a monthly fee for the comprehensive services that are provided for all regular education students attending the Integrated Preschool Program.
All preschool sessions are two and one-half-hour classes, Monday through Friday. The three-year-old program runs in the morning from 8:30 am to 11:00 am. The four-year-old program runs in the afternoon from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm.
As with any school-aged resident child, Millburn Township School District provides a full continuum of services for students aged three to five years old who are found eligible for special education and related services through the evaluation process.
The ratio of regular education students to special needs students is approximately 50-50, with the scales more often leaning toward the regular education population. This integrated program (inclusionary) follows a general education preschool curriculum. All of the preschool integrated teachers are additionally Teacher of the Handicapped Certified. The special needs students receive in-class support through their teacher, and related services are provided in accordance with their IEPs. Each preschool integrated class is additionally staffed by a paraprofessional. Behaviorist support is provided on an as-needed basis.
Special needs students are automatically admitted to the program upon determination of eligibility for special education and related services. Regular education students are admitted through a yearly lottery process. It is the philosophy of the Millburn Preschool Program to foster developmentally appropriate programs for its students and to encourage them to become independent, confident learners.
Regular education students must submit an application for eligibility for the preschool program. Applicants must be three years of age on or before October 1 of the year they will attend, and fully toilet-trained as of the start of school in September. The four-year-old program is automatically populated with returning students from the previous three-year-old class. Applications for four-year-old students will be accepted solely for placement on a waitlist. If an opening becomes available due to a student leaving the program, the waitlist is utilized.
