Eating Disorders
Types:
Anorexia Nervosa—self-starvation and excessive weight loss
Bulimia Nervosa—secretive cycle of binge eating followed by purging
Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Eating Disorder—periods of uncontrolled, compulsive eating followed by periods of starvation or repetitive dieting
Other Eating Disorders—a combination of the above
Signs and Symptoms:
Refusal to maintain body weight at or minimally above normal weight
Fear of being fat despite dramatic weight loss
Extreme eating behaviors
Episodes of bingeing and purging
Low self esteem
Difficulty communicating negative emotions or resolving conflict
Perfectionist/people pleaser
History of being bullied/physical or sexual abuse
Feelings of loss of control
Coexisting with other psychological disorders
Unable to cope
