The Curriculum and Instruction Department is focused on the following key areas:

Standards-Based Curriculum:

John Connolly

John Connolly, Assistant Superintendent

A Millburn native and graduate of Millburn High School, John began his education career in Madison, NJ, as a Health and Physical Education Teacher, later advancing to K–12 Supervisor of Health and Physical Education. From 2008 to 2017, he was Assistant Principal/Dean of Students at Madison High School before returning to Millburn to lead MMS. He served as Principal of Millburn Middle School (MMS) from  July 2017 -  December 2024.

During his tenure at MMS, John implemented numerous initiatives to enhance the social and emotional well-being of students and staff, including adopting Challenge Success recommendations to reduce stress, earning MMS recognition as a No Place for Hate School, introducing a new bell schedule, and fostering a stronger sense of community through the One Millburn initiative. He  also played a key role in curriculum and staff development, budgeting, and staffing.

John holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Rowan University and a Master of Arts in Education, Human Services Leadership, from the College of St. Elizabeth.

Abi joined Millburn Township Public Schools in March 2024. She serves as Mr. Connolly’s assistant, and supports the Office of Curriculum & Instruction.

Oona Abrams

Oona Abrams,

Director of English Language Arts (ELA)

Oona Marie Abrams became an educator in 1996 and taught high school English for 26 years before becoming a curriculum administrator. Oona has a bachelor's degree in English and Secondary Education from the University of Mount Saint Vincent, a master’s degree in writing from Manhattanville University, and an Educational Specialist Degree in Leadership, Management, and Policy from Seton Hall University, where she is currently pursuing her doctoral degree. She is an active member of NCTE, NJCTE, and the Conference on English Leadership. Her writing about Language Arts pedagogy has been published in Bloomsbury Press, Educational Leadership, Educational Viewpoints, English Leadership Quarterly, and New Jersey English Journal

Curriculum Supervisors

MISSY

Melissa Bryan, Supervisor

ELA/Library (6-12)

Melissa Bryan has been a secondary ELA and ESL/ELL educator in New Jersey public schools since 2007. She holds an M.A. in Teaching English and an M.A. in Creative Writing and Literature, and she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Literacy at the University at Albany. Ms. Bryan has also served as an adjunct faculty member in the English Department at Union County College, the MAT program at Drew University, and in the developmental reading program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is a dedicated National Writing Project teacher-consultant and an active member in both the Drew Writing Project & Digital Literacies Collaborative and in the New Jersey Literacy Association.

Kristen Brynildsen, Supervisor

Social Studies (PK-12)

Kristen Brynildsen joined Millburn Township Schools in July 2025 as the PK-12 Social Studies Supervisor. Prior to coming to Millburn, Ms. Brynildsen served as the K-12 Social Studies Supervisor in the Parsippany Troy-Hills School District. She brings valuable classroom teaching experience, having taught history at West Morris Central High School for 19 years. She holds MA degrees in Educational Leadership and Social Studies Education from the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University.

Jen Doney

Jennifer Doney, Supervisor

ELA/Library (PK-5)

Jennifer Doney has been a dedicated member of the Millburn Township Public Schools faculty since 2007. She currently serves as the PK–5 Supervisor of English Language Arts and Library/Media, following her tenure as Instructional Supervisor at Glenwood School. Drawing on her extensive experience as an intermediate, primary, and academic intervention teacher, Mrs. Doney supports the diverse learning needs of the district’s elementary students.

She holds an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania and has pursued advanced training through Teachers College at Columbia University and the Institute for Multisensory Education. Mrs. Doney is committed to fostering a holistic approach to literacy—cultivating readers and writers who not only build confidence through skill development but also find joy in literature and develop the ability to think critically about the ideas they encounter.

Dr. Andrea Knorr joined Millburn Township Public Schools in July of 2025 and serves as the secondary supervisor for Science & Technology. Previously, she was the K-12 Supervisor of Math, Science, & Technology for Bordentown Regional District. Before pursuing educational administration, Dr. Knorr taught Honors and AP Chemistry for West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District for more than 11 years. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut

Dena Leslie

Dena Leslie, Supervisor

Science, Math, Technology (PK-5)

Dena Leslie joined Millburn Township Public Schools in July 2025 and serves as the PreK–5 Supervisor of Math and STEM. Most recently, she served as the K–5 Math and Science Instructional Facilitator in Summit Public Schools, where she provided instructional coaching, supported teacher growth through a collaborative model, and guided curriculum and assessment development. She also brings more than a decade of classroom experience as an elementary teacher, and together, these experiences help her partner with and support educators and students alike.

She holds master’s degrees in both Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership, both of which have helped shape her belief that by working side-by-side with teachers, they can build collaborative, supportive learning environments. Mrs. Leslie is dedicated to ensuring that with the right resources, teacher-centered professional learning, and ongoing support, educators can create classrooms where students thrive and meaningful, engaging learning takes place every day.

Susie Lopes Glen

Susana Lopes-Glenn, Supervisor

World Language/ESL (PK-12)

Susana Lopes-Glenn has been a High School Spanish Educator in New Jersey since 2011. She holds a Master of Science in Education and she is currently working on her Ed. Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction. With a passion for language and a commitment to shaping global citizens, Ms. Lopes-Glenn was previously a Spanish teacher at Mendham and Millburn High Schools. As a member of FLENJ, ACTFL, and TEEEM, Ms. Lopes-Glenn values the importance of language instruction for connecting with others and understanding diverse perspectives. With a focus on language acquisition, she supports the MTPS World Languages and ESL Departments in creating engaging learning experiences that not only build language proficiency but also foster a deep appreciation for the world and the importance of service learning and community engagement.
