Introducing Our New High School Principal:  Mr. Robert B. Nixon, Jr.

Millburn Public Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Robert B. Nixon, Jr., as the new Principal of Millburn High School.  With 28 years of experience in education, including 21 years as an administrator, Mr. Nixon brings a wealth of leadership expertise, professional accomplishments, and a deep commitment to student success.

For the past decade, Mr. Nixon has served as the Principal of Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights.  There he worked to foster a positive, inclusive, and high-achieving school community.  During his tenure, he led initiatives that strengthened student achievement on the SAT, ACT, AP, and state assessments, while also developing intervention programs to support learners facing academic or emotional challenges.  His leadership was also recognized district-wide, as he successfully guided the Berkeley Heights Public Schools as Acting Superintendent during a period of transition.

Mr. Nixon’s career has included a broad range of roles, providing him with a comprehensive perspective on school leadership.  He has served as a teacher, athletic trainer, and coach at Cranford High School (7.5 years); Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, and Supervisor in Bound Brook (6.5 years)l Assistant Principal at Governor Livingston High School (2 years); Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Bound Brook (1 year); and Principal at Governor Livingston for more than 10 years.

Beyond his school leadership responsibilities, Mr. Nixon remains active in professional organizations, serving as President of the Berkeley Heights Administrators Association, Treasurer of the Union County High School Principals Association and as a member of the NJ Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) Council and Nominating Committee.

Mr. Nixon describes himself as “an innovative leader, committed to strategic thinking, visionary leadership, and collaborative, data-driven decision-making, while never losing sight of the interpersonal relationships that are essential to a thriving school community”. He takes great pride in mentoring emerging leaders.  Several of his former assistant principals have gone on to become principals themselves.  His leadership philosophy is rooted in the belief that success must be measured not only by academic achievement, but also by the growth, resilience, and well-being of students.

Looking ahead, Mr. Nixon is eager to immerse himself in the culture, tradition, and history of Millburn High School.  “I am excited to begin building strong relationships with our students, staff, and families,” he shared.  “By listening, learning, and observing, I will look  to identify opportunities for growth while working collaboratively to ensure that Millburn High School continues to thrive as a place of excellence, innovation, and opportunity.”

Outside of his professional life, Mr. Nixon enjoys coaching his children, spending time outdoors, traveling, and listening to music.  He and his wife, Shannon (who previously taught at Wyoming School!) are the proud parents of their son, Bobby, a current high school junior, and their daughter, Brooke, a high school sophomore.

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Robert B. Nixon, Jr. to the Millburn school community!  We are excited for the leadership, energy, and vision he will bring to Millburn High School.
